GOING BY CAR?
Some like to take a car or motor home tour to Nordkapp in Norway, which is the northernmost site in Continental Europe.
If you are planning to drive from Helsinki (having arrived on a ferry), then we recommend the following routes:
- Helsinki-Lahti-Jyväskylä-Oulu-Tornio-Muonio- Kilpisjärvi (the fastest, but a bit dull between Jyväskylä and Oulu)
- Helsinki-Lahti-Mikkeli-Varkaus-Kuopio-Oulu- Tornio-Muonio-Kilpisjärvi (quite nice in the summertime)
- Helsinki-Tampere-Seinäjoki-Kokkola-Kuopio-Oulu- Tornio-Muonio-Kilpisjärvi (quite nice a route in the summertime)
Another possibility would be to drive up to Tornio thru Sweden, and then continue from Tornio up to Muonio and Kilpisjärvi.
In any case - we recommend the route via Tornio river valley on the Finnish side [picture above], since it is among the best scenic routes in Finland.
When you start climbing the arm of Finland from Muonio towards Kilpisjärvi, the landscape turns into rugged wilderness, home of the reindeer.
We can almost guarantee you will see some of the reindeer on your way.
When you have reached Muotkatakka, the highest road location in Finland, you will encounter the magnificient mountainous valley scenes in front of your eyes.
You have arrived to the lands of Saana and Halti mountain fells and the land of unforgettable experiences.
FOTO: With Kilpis Taxi you can get to Troms in Norway or like these folks - just take a tour and see some sights.
