SNOWMOBILING
Enontekiö municipality maintains the official snowmobile trails. Some other trails are maintained by the Forest Agency of Finland. For non-residents going outside these trails is not allowed. Don't worry; there is a myriad of official trails. Keeping on the official tracks is also a safety measure.

Kilpisjärvi-Palojärvi-trail needs a special paying trail permit, since the trail goes thru some fragile wilderness. This permit can be bought from Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre.

There are smaller trails marked by tree branches. These are non-public trails only for service use or to be used with a special permit.

Public trails have cross-signed markers with reflectors. On the ice, red bars are used for trail markers. The driver needs to be at least 15, but there are places where smaller kids can ride smaller snowmobiles. Kilpisjärvi has to offer multitude of different types of snowmobile safaris. HELI-SKI AND OTHER HELICOPTER ADVENTURES
Helicopter is so expensive, you may think. Yes, if you rent it for hours all on your own. But if you and buddies hire it together for heli-ski or a transition to another place close by, then it won't amount to that much per person. This way you will get so much more out of your stay, since you can get to places faster. A very welcome plus is to see the amazing views up from the air. Who would not want to tell back home how nice it was taking the helicopter here and there. During the high season there are often 2-3 helicopters available.

ICE HOLE SWIMMING
This treat to try is only for the crazies. Some Finns actually love taking a short swim in the hole made to the frozen lake. This type of "swimming" is usually accompanied with sauna.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING AND DOWNHILL

Kilpisjärvi is a place where you can ski in mid-June, or already in October. We have the longest ski-season in Finland. An added bonus is the magnificent view you get to enjoy while skiing. There is so much of just empty space with well-maintained ski tracks.

Kilpisjärvi is not e regular downhill ski centre. There is no lift to the top of the fells. Instead, you can take a ride up the fell on a snowmobile or do heli-skiing. There are also places where to try extreme skiing.

ICE FISHING
Are you into fishing? During the winter you can do what is called ice fishing - thru a hole in the ice. Safari companies can arrange this for you. Kilpisjärvi is also the site of a big ice fishing event: Only Two Fish. It is among the biggest ice fishing events in the country - organized in May, when the ice is still very thick.

PARAGLIDING TO THE LAKE
Paragliding has become a popular hobby in Kilpisjärvi. You get your gear up the fell very fast on a snowmobile. Many para gliders think Kilpisjärvi is THE place to do paragliding in Finland. Saana fell is especially suitable for paragliding. The prevailing winds around Kilpisjärvi are very favourable to this sport.
